Churros or Michelin Men

Remember when I said I wanted to learn how to bake? I actually took the first step to whip something up from scratch! Shocking, I know but I had to start somewhere because mother said the best way to learn is to bake it myself. She told me to start with a simple recipe and suggested churros. I went on YouTube, searched for the easiest recipe and with a list of ingredients I already had on hand, I went straight to the kitchen ignoring the fact that it was already midnight because boy was I excited.

Scoop soft dough into a pastry bag, pipe onto a cookie sheet and bake for 20 minutes,” I read aloud. Pretty basic to me. There was simply no need for a pedagogical approach, (snobbish much HAHA) or so I thought.

My sister, FNM, taught me how to operate the oven beforehand so I had it preheated to 180°C. I started working on the mixture in a saucepan over medium-high heat to form the dough ball and made sure there were no flour lumps. I incorporated my egg mix little by little into the dough and stirred them for what seemed like ages using my wooden spoon and ended up hurting my arm. I wanted the dough to have the appearance of mashed potatoes because that was how they looked like in the video.

I followed everything precisely because perfectionist :}

My dough was then transferred into a piping bag fitted with a star nozzle and in all honesty, this step was just tedious and messy and I was so frustrated I started waking FNM up to ask for help. She looked at me in disbelief because the consistency of my batter wasn’t thick enough and also because my piping bag was overflowing with dough. I just shrugged in disappointment. Hashtag failure.

On the pans, I piped the dough carelessly into medium-sized churros as I was already so agitated looking at the mess in the kitchen. I wanted to get everything over and done with quickly so I could clean my workspace…

Baked churros do come together in minutes though but I waited long enough for them to turn golden brown. The aroma of my freshly baked churros was so comforting that it restored my excitement (and faith) in baking.

I thought they were coming together...
But no... Do not be deceived by great lighting!!
I left them to cool but my churros turned flat and apparently, it was amusing to my mum that she began taking pictures of my odd-looking goodies and had a good laugh about it... She told me to practice so I can perfect them before adding my own variations and to not give up but of course it was only after the guilt kicked in. But all is good because I wasn’t even offended. She had a point though, I mean look at them. The resemblance of the Michelin Man is real.

They tasted like cream puffs instead, so not bad ey?
